Why mushrooms will save us all

Because plastic lasts for so long, every single piece of plastic ever made still exists — and will continue to do so for at least 500 years. Which is insane. As it breaks down, it gets into our waterways, our food chains… our breastmilk!

That’s why companies that are championing solutions are to be commended. In fact, I’ve been looking into the magical properties of mushrooms, which can do everything from filter our water to heal our bodies. In particular, though, I’ve been coming across more companies that are making packaging out of mycelium – or mushrooms.

There are so many benefits to doing this that it’s hard to believe it hasn’t become legislation to bin off plastic production and to turn to this.

Mushrooms make for high-performing packaging solutions that’s cost-competitive, thermally insulating and water-resistant. Chuck it in the compost bin and it will compost in 45 days.

It really could be the answer – if only more companies took the time to acquaint themselves with it. Here’s one that’s doing great work.
