Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is the only Indian city to still maintain its tram network, which dates back to 1902. Now the city has turned one of the trams into a mobile library to attract new passengers and give the service a boost.

The Library on Wheels will travel 4.5km through Kolkata’s university quarter and will have a regular rotation of books, magazines and text books, as well as free wifi and air conditioning, and will host book launches and reading sessions.

“It is a beautiful and small addition* to Kolkata’s literary landscape,” said Rajanvir Singh Kapur, managing director of the West Bengal Transport Corporation.
